My life as a new mom

She got her first fever, I freaked out!

On the 17th Mavity got 4 shots for her 4 month check up. She cried a bit during the shots but overall handled them pretty well. She was really good the rest of the day, to my delight. I was worried because I heard that the 4 month shots can really ruin their day. So we were lucky that Mavity was fine all day. I got her dressed in her pj's, which were hilarious! She had on pink kitty cat pants, an orange, yellow and brown onsie with giraffes on it and pink socks. She looked so cute in her silly little outfit. The night before she was in short sleeves and seemed cold (since the air conditioning is right above her bed) so I was making sure she was all covered up that night. We went to bed as usual and at about 2:30 Mavity started getting fussy. This is pretty normal for her so I just got out the milk supply (me) and tried to feed her. She didn't want any part of it. She kept fussing so finally I sat up, picked her up and noticed that she was hot. I immediatly started stripping off her clothes. I felt so bad that I had bundled her up and she was boiling. I got up took her into her room and took her temp. This is my least favorite thing to do because I have to stick the thermometer up her little rear end and I feel terrible doing it.

So I check her temp and the rectal thermometer says 100.9. OH MY GOD! My daughter has a fever, what do I do?!? I go in and tell the Daddy man that Mav has a fever and I'm freaking out. Now the rational part of me knows that it is because of the shots and that it is very common for them to have a bit of a fever and that everything is fine, but the new mommy part of me is flipping out unneccissarily. I call the all night pediatric urgent care and they can't tell me anything over the phone. They tell me to call my pediactrician's on call number. "WHAT? I don't have that number!" So I call the pediatricians office hoping their stupid automated message will be able to help me, it of course does not help at all! The urgent care also told me that I could call the hospital's nurse line. So I call them and the stupid automated voice message tells me that they are closed! Well WTF good is that going to do anyone? So, now I've called 3 different places and no one can answer my simple little question of what I can do for my daughter! All I want to know is if I can give her tylenol or not! Not that I had any tylenol but if I would have I would like to know if I could give it to her.

It is now about 4am. I'm at my wits end and decide that I am going to call my mom. As the phone is ringing I'm worried that I'm scarying the crap out of my mom by calling her at 4am. She answers the phone (finally someone answers the phone, I would have been pissed if it would have been her voicemail!) "What's wrong?" She says. Through my tears, "Mav has a fever and I don't know what to do!" After about a half hour on the phone with my mom I'm calmed down enough to rest and let Mavity sleep. At around 6am I wake up the daddy man and tell him that we need tylenol. He says, "do we even know if she can have any?" "No, but I'm hoping the bottle will tell me." He goes and Mav and I sleep. When he gets home I get up and read the label, "Ages 2 and under, talk to doctor first." Excuse my language but "SHIT!" So now I'm thinking ok, it's 6am that damn nurse line better be open now. I call the nurse line again and they are open! I tell them everything and they say, "what insurance do you have?" WTF does that matter? I just need to know if I can give her tylenol or not!!!!!!! I tell them my insurance company and they say, "ok, well we will need to transfer you to their nurse line." AWESOME, THANKS! So I'm transferred to the other nurse line.

"Hi, thank you for calling [insert insurance name here] help line, how can we help you?" I tell this lady the whole story and she asks me a bunch of questions and after about 15 minutes says. "We can't tell you how much tylenol you can give her so I would just wait and call your pediatrician when they open." SERIOUSLY??? WTF! Why won't anyone give me a freakin answer.

I finally gave up and went to sleep. I figured if she was sleeping through it that she was fine.

When we woke up for the day I called the pediatricians office. No, joke this is how the conversation went.
"This is the nurse how can I help you"
"My daughter had her 4 month shots yesterday and she has had a fever since 3am and I'm wondering what I can do for her."
"Just give her .8mL of tylenol every four hours."
"Thanks."
CLICK!
OMG, so that information would have been really good to know YESTERDAY BEFORE I LEFT THE DR'S OFFICE!!!!!!!

So, ends up, I give her tylenol and the fever goes away within the hour. Crisis diverted, kind of.
